anyting nah

One will always find a gem if you look and appreciate the moment when it happens. We the people of the rock still like to have an independent appliance service man, a 'bachac crew' rather than a well organized landscape service provider and of course the real gem if you can find him, the joiner or in this case 'master wooden floor man' (MWFM). So, I find myself with a problem, no details necessary, and arrange to meet the MWFM. Where to meet I ask? 'By the mad house is the reply. Bang on time, which for me you win already, and off we go to the job site. The car he drives is creaking and groaning, not a problem we arrive. He jumps out, not wearing Armani, and we get down to the business of the day. He takes one look at the problem, throws off his sandals, sits on the wooden floor and starts the magic show. A man of few words the MWFM solves the problem. The wooden floor is returned to its original look, he was not impressed with the overall finish of the rest of the floor but that was not why we were there.

Time to compensate, 'anyting nah!' We all know the 'independents' they are wonderful people, they normally work alone because they cannot handle the laziness and don't care attitude of others. I wish we would restart the apprenticeship schemes that were managed by Texaco, Caroni and T&TEC. Maybe the MIC and other trade schools are functional but the highly qualified craftsmen are few and far between. Maybe the Journeyman system of Germany would be an option. It should be noted that the success of the system is the close partnership among all social players. The system is run by both public and private interests. Germany has the lowest youth unemployment rate in Europe. The system that is used is an integral part of the general education and training system in Germany. Just a thought!

The rains have finally stopped and the post mortem on the handling of the devastation caused by the flooding has started. All I can say is that tens of thousands of citizens of the rock have been adversely affected. There is a report of one person dying as a result of the flooding and numerous instances of close encounters. Whether it was a storm, a reportable incident or just plain rainy season rain is not the issue. The fact that so many people have been affected and the tens of millions of dollars in damage is great cause for concern. I have said before, the issue of flooding on a land mass this size has to be manageable. The aftermath of heavy rains can be predictable and in this day of virtual data no community should be allowed to suffer. Our OPDM should be in communities long before it hits the fan. Sorry PMOTT, it is your responsibility! The management of the ODPM failed and must be fired forthwith, forget whose friend is whose, Colonel or no Colonel!

There is a great 1/3 moon tonight, looking very calm and beautiful in the western sky. Living on a tropical island has its benefits. If we could only fix those fools in the Parliament then we would be in paradise.

Good night and good luck!

R&R

We had two of the four grands spend the weekend with us whilst the parents went off to the North Coast for some rest and relaxation. From all reports, the sojourn was well spent with both singing the praises of our North Coast, no beach, just R&R. We are ten minutes from the coast and I hate to admit it but it is rare that we venture north. One of the selling points of coming to live in the wilds of Maraval in 1983 was the fact that Maracas Bay was a mere 30 mins away. Maracas could have been next door it did not matter, we just do not do it. Having grandchildren I think puts you in a very different place. When our kids were growing up we were struggling with building a business from scratch, living off of a teachers salary, impossible then as it is now, and generally ketching. But as it is with all things in life we survived. Looking back at those years it was difficult, kids, dogs, mortgage and other loans, but you knew why you were putting yourself through all this hard...

ADD

A great thing happened today. I washed my car and it did not rain. OK, so other absolutely great things made history today, I am sure something was discovered that will change mankind, decisions by world leaders for world peace. None of that is of interest to me because the simple task of washing my car was what was of great import and I marvelled at the sun and dry weather. It is the little things in ones life that give the greatest joy. Tomorrow should be the same with a prediction of only 20% precipitation. Two days with a clean car is good. I am one of those who curse WASA who has leaks on the main roads with spray flying all around and dirtying up my clean car. WASA should have zero leaks, that should be WASA's goal, I don't think that they are interested in any of this as the leaks continue and the complaints from the citizens continue. I remember in the Manifesto of the ruling party a commitment was made to increase the truck delivery of truck borne water. Go figure! ...

Delta 4 over and out!

Sitting here in Maraval tonight its very windy with the electrical power dipping every now and again. From all reports the storm has gone to the north and the island of Trinidad is OK. Tobago however could be in for a rough patch. The Tropical Storm, now named Bret, is the second for the season and was formed very low in the Atlantic and threatened both Trinidad and Tobago. The last time a hurricane was named Bret was in August, 1999. It was a category 4 hurricane that thankfully did not prove to be that destructive with minimum fatalities and physical damage to property. Of course I marvel at the officialdom in T&T. Today, the party boats were out sailing to wherever. The island is under a storm watch and nobody thought it wise to restrict non-essential marine traffic. The Tobago ferries were restricted, the offshore oil and gas platforms were being evacuated and we were at the same time loading 'feters' to go on a party cruise. What exactly is the protocol? If a storm e...
