Spotter

October, I believe, is considered the second hottest month of the year in the island state, after May. Tonight sitting outside the humidity is so high that I am just dripping with sweat. October is the change in the seasons. The winds drop off to practically nothing, the rains ease up and the clammy weather just hangs there. Come to think of it, May does the same, a kind of nothing weather month.
One good thing about October is we celebrate 10/10 so we can look forward to some good Chinese food. When is Chinese food ever bad?

Thirty (30) years ago starting the business in Chaguanas there was one Chinese restaurant we went to. There was not much to choose from. Like Arima back in the 60's, I think there was one decent guy. For take-out you went with your own containers up the not-so-nice back stairs to pick up your order. Then in the capital you went to Charlotte St. for take-out, or Cipriani Blvd by 'Spotter'. Apparently when the Turf Club was still in existence if your horse won the lime was by 'Spotter'. How times have changed!

I love how when ordering in a Chinese restaurant the server never writes down anything, probably because Trini's always order the same thing. The menu might be a hundred different items but it seems we always end up with the same rice, chicken, shrimp, pork, steamed whatever and of course everyones fav 'chunky veg'.

In Charlieville Chaguanas, the Chinese restaurants do not serve any pork. As we may be aware Charlieville is a heavily populated Muslim community. In fact, other restaurants in Chaguanas are very much aware of the religious dietary restrictions, no meat, no pork.

It seems that the servers not writing down the food order because they know it's going to be the same thing regardless, could be likened to the 2018 Budget presentation. I actually started to read the wrong Budget speech published by one media house but did not notice until some things did not seem right.
The LOTO had her day today and I am confused. How can (1) not be (1)? How can the figures being presented be that incorrect? If the Minister of Finance has presented incorrect figures to mislead the people, forget the Parliament, he should be expelled from the Lower House permanently and a bi-election held. If the LOTO has intentionally misled the people by quoting incorrect figures then she must do the right thing and resign her position as an MP and the Political Leader of the UNC.
The statements being made by the LOTO were startling, accusing the Government of falsifying the figures pertaining to revenue collected, expenditure, debt ratios, borrowings and other economic data vital to the survival of the rock. Whoever is fiddling with the figures has to go!

We as the owners cannot simply sit back and say, "Oh well is politics". We cannot just accept 'Parliamentary privilege' as the reason for falsifying the figures. It's our arse in the wringer!

There were a number of protests outside the Parliament today, it's the peoples' right to show their disgust at what is happening in the so-called 'hallowed halls'. The groups directly affected, the man in the street, maxi taxi drivers, fishermen, casino workers and just vex people showed their disagreement with what is happening. Not the first time and for sure not the last time.

Not condoning any form of violence, but the Red House was destroyed by an increase in the water rates in Port of Spain in 1903. This particular situation makes very interesting reading. I suggest one reads the circumstances surrounding the 1903 riots, it seems that Trinidad has not changed much since then.

There is a heavy vibe on the rock and I hope the powers that be understand how the population feels. People are not whispering they are being very vocal, like the Rate Payers of 1903.

Have a great weekend people.

Good night and good luck!

'apology' expression of regret at having caused trouble for someone

Today Trinidad and Tobago was on fire. The discussions on the 'apology,' discussions on the status of the Parliament, everybody is now a certified meteorological expert reporting rainy season rain, people were out and about being very assertive about things that many of them did not really understand. Heat in the place! The statements being made, which caused the 'apology' to then be made, were being said, I think, without really understanding who we are as a people. This is 2017 and we still are having trouble in coming to grips with many social and historic issues that strangely enough are being discussed every day in many places and yet it is only a problem depending on who makes the statement. Let me say that the statement that was made was, even though to many factual, however it rubbed people the wrong way. This is where I have a problem. You read columns written by certain persons that under no circumstances will offend any sector of the society. That same posi

'the bongo night'

She looks at me and says ' you know what night it is?'. I immediately think of 'the bongo night' and she says 'it's Sunday that means popcorn'. So much for 'bongo'. Love the tropics, it is dark by 6.30 and will be light by 6.00am. This is good for ones being, the daylight and nighttime are more or less equal, good balance. We attended a showing of yet another brilliant artist, Abigail Hadeed, whose work spans decades. Her photography is exceptional and her current show ' the Weight of Water' at the 'Y' is something not to be missed. We are a truly talented people, only 1.3m of us yet we can produce world-class works of art. This is why we are very special, very special indeed. I see the great country of America is having their 'midterm' election.  Why should this be of any import for a small island like ourselves? Well for starters I think there is an equivalent Trini population living in the good ole USA. Depending on h

'aghhhhhhhh'

This week has me feeling so down about the rock and what really is our future. I have always considered myself to be Mr. Optimistic. Things would be bad, sometimes downright terrible with little or no hope and I would be there battling it out. The hard part is our present and future position is all man made [excuse the gender] and it seems that no matter what we do, how we vote, who we put our trust in, it somehow ends up bad. In 1956, the hope was there, a mass appeal, in 1986 it returned and was destroyed by 1990, in 2010 432,026 electors voted for the Peoples Partnership, in excess of 60% of the population. By 2015 a lot of the love disappeared and we found ourselves in a position of no-where once again. I use these years because the popular vote was there, the majority voted overwhelmingly for the winning party. Even though the winner in 1956 did not win by any semblance of a majority, over 80% of the electorate cast their vote. It is interesting to note that in 1956 the PPPG
