happy

Once again I have been on the run. Heading to the cold north and busy with earning an honest dollar. I thought that by now in my retiring years that I would be happy to be doing nothing. How can one spend their entire life doing and then be contented doing zip all? The brain is not wired that way, at least for some of us, and age becomes a number, nothing else. We still have a world to conquer, many battles to be fought, good over evil, not setting an alarm, not driving in traffic and having a leisurely lunch, way to go!

Traveling to the northern climes recently I do not understand the reason for the greeting 'happy holiday' and not 'happy Christmas'. Is there a difference, am I offending people, what exactly is the season we are supposed to be celebrating? On the rock we wish people 'happy Divali', 'happy Eid', 'happy Christmas', 'happy Indian Arrival', 'happy Emancipation', 'happy Carnival', 'happy Independence', maybe we are too 'happy' a people. Depending on the celebration we all dress the part. I guess if the northern retailers found a way to capitalise on all the other celebrations then everyone would be real 'happy'.

Back on the rock, there is something amiss with the judiciary. Every weekend, in one particular daily,  there is an expose on the Chief Justice. What exactly is the issue? There are stories that are leading the populace to believe that all is not well. There are references to people who are somehow associated with the CJ who are possible LGBT members and as far as I am concerned that is a non issue. A non issue if it is that it is a non issue. LGBT is real as is homophobia, sorry PMOTT.  My real problem is having the head honcho of the Judiciary being questioned as to whether he is not being straight up with the population. One's personal lifestyle preference is just that, make the statement. It is a long time coming where people can be exactly who they are!
Our laws still discriminate against lifestyle preferences which is archaic, the mother country has done away with those stupid, ridiculous Victorian nonsense laws and yet still as good servants we still maintain them.

I am aware that the now infamous Tobago ferry disaster is taking a new turn. The State is taking action against the agent for the Super Fast Galicia for breach of contract. That is their right and I hope that as a result all will be made very public. This sordid, embarrassing mess, created by none other than the PMOTT, might finally come to a head. I am very interested in the outcome because I just happened to be the Line Minister responsible for the Tobago ferry service at the time and this must be put to rest.
All I can say is that what ever happened in 2014 was what it was and what it is now is what it is, full stop.

The blame is being spread far and wide! Who is responsible for the failure of the Gang Act or whatever it's called? It is a sitting Government's responsibility to pass Legislation, it is a negotiation, a compromise, trust, deal making, it's politics. It is not about crying and moaning, blaming the other side. Do your homework, organise your business, step up to the plate.
The current PMOTT, when LOTO, stated that he was not going to support any legislation brought by the PPG, whatsoever.  Big crocodile tears by the PMOTT, the Min of Nat Sec balling down the place, he himself a complete and utter failure, the current Administration in disarray, crime running rampant in ALL constituencies, not only in Government controlled constituencies as claimed by the PMOTT.  In the meantime we, like lambs to the slaughter, are left to face the banditry and murderous situation every single day of life. The Ag CoP has decided on his own that the citizenry must not be in a position to defend itself. The only people allowed arms and ammunition are the bandits! He is being considered for the permanent position of Commissioner of Police.
I wonder when applying for a job like the CoP what exactly is the criteria? What is the pass mark? I would think that being in the job for the past however many years and not being able to deal with crime, despite the largest ever budget allocation, one would have to seriously consider your performance.
On the rock, performance is not a consideration, ask Petrotrin.

Coming closer to the year end, notice I did not say 'Happy New Year' for fear of being accused of being politically incorrect, I really wish the rock, HAPPY CHRISTMAS! Will have a couple more blogs before year end and intend to be very seasonal!

Love this place, love my rock, love my green hills, cool north breeze blowing through the valley, rain in the night, soon the smell of a baking ham, already munching on pastelles, parang on the radio, just a good feel all round!

People of the only rock on earth, good night and good luck!

'apology' expression of regret at having caused trouble for someone

Today Trinidad and Tobago was on fire. The discussions on the 'apology,' discussions on the status of the Parliament, everybody is now a certified meteorological expert reporting rainy season rain, people were out and about being very assertive about things that many of them did not really understand. Heat in the place! The statements being made, which caused the 'apology' to then be made, were being said, I think, without really understanding who we are as a people. This is 2017 and we still are having trouble in coming to grips with many social and historic issues that strangely enough are being discussed every day in many places and yet it is only a problem depending on who makes the statement. Let me say that the statement that was made was, even though to many factual, however it rubbed people the wrong way. This is where I have a problem. You read columns written by certain persons that under no circumstances will offend any sector of the society. That same posi

'the bongo night'

She looks at me and says ' you know what night it is?'. I immediately think of 'the bongo night' and she says 'it's Sunday that means popcorn'. So much for 'bongo'. Love the tropics, it is dark by 6.30 and will be light by 6.00am. This is good for ones being, the daylight and nighttime are more or less equal, good balance. We attended a showing of yet another brilliant artist, Abigail Hadeed, whose work spans decades. Her photography is exceptional and her current show ' the Weight of Water' at the 'Y' is something not to be missed. We are a truly talented people, only 1.3m of us yet we can produce world-class works of art. This is why we are very special, very special indeed. I see the great country of America is having their 'midterm' election.  Why should this be of any import for a small island like ourselves? Well for starters I think there is an equivalent Trini population living in the good ole USA. Depending on h

'aghhhhhhhh'

This week has me feeling so down about the rock and what really is our future. I have always considered myself to be Mr. Optimistic. Things would be bad, sometimes downright terrible with little or no hope and I would be there battling it out. The hard part is our present and future position is all man made [excuse the gender] and it seems that no matter what we do, how we vote, who we put our trust in, it somehow ends up bad. In 1956, the hope was there, a mass appeal, in 1986 it returned and was destroyed by 1990, in 2010 432,026 electors voted for the Peoples Partnership, in excess of 60% of the population. By 2015 a lot of the love disappeared and we found ourselves in a position of no-where once again. I use these years because the popular vote was there, the majority voted overwhelmingly for the winning party. Even though the winner in 1956 did not win by any semblance of a majority, over 80% of the electorate cast their vote. It is interesting to note that in 1956 the PPPG
