crapaud

Finally, the dry season has arrived, more or less on cue.  The yellow poui, one of four trees we planted 30 yrs ago, is starting its first flowering. Not sure if it flowers thrice before the start of the rainy season, we shall soon see! Nature is alive and well in the Moka valley, saw our first large crapaud in a long time. I remember our friends from Chickland lamenting the fact that fires and human development had destroyed the habitat for these strange creatures so much so that she saw frogs climbing the wooden utility poles, I guess assuming that these were trees. These nights on my slug patrol I am seeing all kinds of nocturnal beings hiding amongst the leaves of various plants and shrubs. Very healthy!

What is not very healthy is the state of the State. Can you imagine for one moment the embarrassment that the CJ debacle has caused?  We now have an outgoing President in direct, open conflict with the Executive. I thought there was a regular meeting between these guys to discuss the state of the Nation? I keep up with the politics of the north and I see such similarities with our two elected leaders. Every time there is a politically negative charged situation something else surfaces immediately and takes the conversation elsewhere. It is as though the entire thing is planned.
We now have a choice of topics and issues to deal with at the same time, one just needs to figure out which one holds more interest. Let's take a look,

  • The complete collapse of the Tobago ferry service.
  • The debacle surrounding the Judiciary, probably one of the most dangerous situations.
  • The collapse of the tourism industry costing the country $100,000,000's.
  • The telling off of the country's major investors, big oil. Not something you do without consequences.
  • The free reign of criminals.
  • The free for all with the drug and gun trade.
  • The lack of foreign investment.
  • The lack of local investment.
  • The imminent Petrotrin explosion.
  • The terror threat.
  • The lack of forex for the majority but forex for the favored.
  • The fact that as a country we cannot appoint a Commissioner of Police.
  • The breakdown in society represented by civil disorder.
  • The failure of 2500 police officers showing up for work over 2018 Carnival.
  • The fact that we have 2759 known gang members and not one single gang member convicted and jailed.
  • The fact that the PMOTT at a public meeting holds up a list of corrupt politicians and that's it, nothing but the list.
  • The fact that an MP's swearing in as a Cabinet Minister failed twice but was successful on the third try.
  • The fact that a current Cabinet Minister and MP still has questions to answer over cash deposits in a commercial bank.
  • The proposed destruction of the only fruit tree germ plasm bank in the country for housing.
Not sure if this is the whole list, hey it's only been two and a half years!

People of the Rock we are reaching a point of no return. Imagine Guyana is now embarking on a future based on hydrocarbons after being the poor child of the Caricom for decades (I must say because of politics) and we are entering a period of uncertainty (because of politics). This cannot happen, the Rock has so much more to offer, we are a creative, brilliant people who have a great future ahead of us. The one thing that we need to determine is what exactly do we want? how do we expect to achieve our goals? and who is going to take us there?

We have some questions to answer in the very near future and this time around we need to be spot on!

Imagine I am liking frogs and other fauna, why not, there is a place for all!

People of the Rock there is a movement happening, there are people finally coming together to build a nation, a true Republic!

Good night and good luck!

Peace and quiet

When you hear the words 'perfect' or 'the best' it makes you feel like a million dollars. Human nature is weird, a simple compliment can turn a whole story into a week of joy! And, yes, I am speaking about the Sunday night popcorn! Apparently, tonight was exceptional. I hope the rest of the week translates into 'perfect'. The horrible news of the deaths of two cyclists over the weekend came as a real shock. We both know a number of people who cycle for good weekend sport and to hear of Joe Brown being killed in an accident was truly heart-rending. When we heard of the accident we started to think of all the people we know who cycle and just hoped it might be somebody we did not know. Is this how it works, you hope that it's not someone you know, what about all the people who actually know the person? Truly a sad day! RIP Joe and Joanna! The issue of cycling and motorists is one that every country I am sure goes through. Is it that the main roads are for...

slug patrol

Time is an illusion!. Albert Einstein, and he should know. Today is already the 1st of March and it seems that we are hurtling through our galaxy at warp speed heading somewhere. The first Carnival Band launch will be in five months, parang music in eight,   and then the whole cycle begins again. This weekend is Pagwa  or the festival of Holi aka the festival of colours. Thousands of Hindus and citizens alike on the Rock will participate in this wonderful, happy ritual of spraying 'abeer' on each other in true friendship. Like many religious festivals it always has something to do with good over evil. Maybe we should declare this entire year the year of Holi and allow the good to take over and remove the evil.            I cannot fathom what is happening on the Rock with the PMOTT appointing a twice sworn -in and twice subsequently removed Minister. This time it came as a thief in the night, even though they really surface that way ...

One of the great things about living on the rock is one is subject to all kinds of natural phenomenon. I know we don't get snow, no, we leave the good parts out for the Canadiens and even those living in northern Florida. We have rain, sun, hurricanes (every so many years), mud volcanos, an entire lake of asphalt, salt ponds, 100% humidity and earthquakes. This morning at 2.27 nature did not disappoint, I first heard the rumbling, thought what the hell is wrong with the #$%^&& air conditioner and then the lovely roll started, the creaking of stuff in the room and then she was gone. I have two Rock earthquake stories, not that earthquakes are funny. In Arima where I grew up in the 'boys room' there was a set of barbells under the bed, under my bed, and loose barbells make the loudest sound when rattled by an earthquake. Motto, go to a gym if you live in an earthquake prone area. Guyana has very few earthquakes that are actually felt. Years ago I read where a fam...
