One of the good things happening on the Rock is the fact that we are not really having a dry season. In the quiet valley of Moka, it continues to rain. The lawn is green, the surrounding hills are lush and zero signs of the dreaded bushfires. There have been wisps of smoke every now and again in areas that have already been butchered but all in all, a very wet dry season. This is by no means the first time that this has happened we have experienced this phenomenon many times before. Many of us would remember January and February being the cane burning months, creating a major environmental problem. The cane has gone but we still have a lot of work to do with the random burning of the hills. Education is a hell of a thing, yes!
All of a sudden the area has been subject to cleaning crews working in the area. The 'bush truck' on a very regular schedule, CEPEP, and of course the very regular 3-day garbage pickup. Our previous garbage truck was an old creaky, banging, air brakes discharging intermittently, gears going in with great difficulty, a truck which one heard from 'quite down the road'.We now have to sometimes race downstairs to put our garbage out because of the new, quiet truck sneaking up on us. We have the same great crew onboard who, if the grans are here, blow the air horn, revving up the engine making plenty noise and the kids think it is great.
As for the cleaning of the area may be an election is in the offing, we would be able to confirm this once we see the 'barber green'.
Speaking of early elections the ruling party is in deep trouble. The beleaguered PMOTT has created his own problems. I know many in 2015 thought that he would have been able to pull things together but the more he attempts the more it falls apart.
So what exactly is the problem with the Government? Is it that the population/electorate has moved on and the PMOTT and crew are steeped in 1956 politics? I think so because there has not been a single innovative thought coming out of the beautiful heliconia bloom. This tropical flower has run its course and like every living thing, it has a shelf life. It must fade and die to be replaced by something new, the existing structure of the party cannot stay where it is and expect the millennials to gravitate to an old tired political system that has little or no bearing on today's lives.
This also goes for the sunny side south of the Caroni. I am afraid the sun is actually setting and not rising. The repetitive rhetoric, the language, the platform music, the tired fading banners not to mention the politicians themselves.
The Rock is finally breaking free of its link to the past, the politics have proven to be no longer meaningful. The issues of a lack of a vision, nothing bright for the future of the hundreds of thousands of voters between the ages of 18-35 has moved that mass towards another place, maybe still to be determined. I do feel that they, this grouping, once gone will not turn back, the past is too scary. All over the world, we see the establishment being dumped and being replaced with what is truly new meaningful politics that will, in fact, provide our young people with hope and a future.
The events of this week with a Cabinet reshuffle and the next day firing of a Minister on the heels of the PMOTT stating that he had full confidence in his Cabinet team says it all. The Government is in complete disarray, it has virtually collapsed on its own sword. A terrible thing to happen, more so when you consider the effect on the country and its inability to drag itself out of a deep recession.
The election slogans of 2015 are all but forgotten other than to be used simply for picong.
Poor Rock! Don't blame anyone, we did it to ourselves and if we refuse to learn from our past we will surely repeat the same errors. The time is now overdue for a radical change in our governance system, our politics and our politicians.
People of the Rock, good night and good luck! Beware of dismissal letters!
