Stephvictus

I walk twice per day in my neighborhood which just happens to be bounding a golf course. When you walk regularly in your local you tend to notice things, a pattern, other walkers, people who do what at what time, who leave home at certain times, all kinds of stuff. Do you know that golfers are very dangerous people? A golfer who is late for his or her tee time is equally as lethal as a golfer leaving the 19th hole. In case you live on or near a golf course this is a public service message, beware!

My life partner and I attended the 'Gay Pride Parade' today at Mandela Park. We actually went early to the fair and did not take part in the actual march. We thought it was only right that we support. I am not going to go into the 'if and or buts' as to the gay issue except to say, people of the Rock, grow up! The world has moved on, we need to understand that people have a right, it is as simple as that.
On the news tonight the march was featured and then the segment closed with statements by an all-male representation from the religious right. They read a passage from none other than 'Levictus'. Now I had heard the name before but I never took the time to figure out where this 'Levictus' was going with his message. So, having read snippets of his teachings, his pronouncements from maybe a thousand years ago, actually the Old Testament, I am still trying to figure out what does this guy have to do with life today? Besides the obvious about a man being with a man, nothing about a woman being with a woman, he also refers to slavery, animal sacrifices and other things that will not be accepted in today's society.

"You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination." Chapter 18 verse 22. "If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them." Chapter 20 verse 13.

How do we deal with this guy, if in fact, it is a guy? Do we head down to Mandela Park and conduct a goat killing ritual, do we bar women who are going through their 'menses' from entering the park, what about slavery, surely we should be following the old Levictus and own slaves? The problem is always the interpretation, you take what makes sense to you at the time forgetting we are dealing with our brothers and sisters. I could actually write a book which speaks to the irony and sheer stupidity of the writings of thousands of years ago and declare it as the 'gospel truth'. All hail 'Stephvictus'!

I have decided not to comment on the new ferry because in fairness to the traveling public I truly believe that the paying passengers should be the only people who should critique the vessel. Many have commented on the good and bad. What I do not understand is the procurement process? How does a Cabinet purchase anything without a process? The cabinet can only make a decision based on studied information. The members of the Cabinet have zero expertise in evaluating anything. The Ministers of Whatever can pronounce as much as they want but at the end of the day they know nothing. No one has quoted an expert opinion on anything, there has been no statement by people in the industry, the users, no one other than Ministers of Cabinet who sorry to say know zip all.
A lawyer, a supermarket owner, a volcanologist, a civil engineer ( with a track record when it comes to buying boats) does not exactly fill the taxpayer with the utmost confidence. Why not simply go through the normal channels? Whatever happened to a public procurement process? The PMOTT makes the statement that a decision has already been made as to the purchase of over a billion dollars in new ferries with absolutely no tendering process. I guess if it all goes belly up then there is the opposition to blame.

People of the Rock, it won't last, the ridiculous system of governance will be a thing of the past. Stay strong!

Good night and good luck!

Peace and quiet

When you hear the words 'perfect' or 'the best' it makes you feel like a million dollars. Human nature is weird, a simple compliment can turn a whole story into a week of joy! And, yes, I am speaking about the Sunday night popcorn! Apparently, tonight was exceptional. I hope the rest of the week translates into 'perfect'. The horrible news of the deaths of two cyclists over the weekend came as a real shock. We both know a number of people who cycle for good weekend sport and to hear of Joe Brown being killed in an accident was truly heart-rending. When we heard of the accident we started to think of all the people we know who cycle and just hoped it might be somebody we did not know. Is this how it works, you hope that it's not someone you know, what about all the people who actually know the person? Truly a sad day! RIP Joe and Joanna! The issue of cycling and motorists is one that every country I am sure goes through. Is it that the main roads are for...

Time is an illusion!. Albert Einstein, and he should know. Today is already the 1st of March and it seems that we are hurtling through our galaxy at warp speed heading somewhere. The first Carnival Band launch will be in five months, parang music in eight,   and then the whole cycle begins again. This weekend is Pagwa  or the festival of Holi aka the festival of colours. Thousands of Hindus and citizens alike on the Rock will participate in this wonderful, happy ritual of spraying 'abeer' on each other in true friendship. Like many religious festivals it always has something to do with good over evil. Maybe we should declare this entire year the year of Holi and allow the good to take over and remove the evil.            I cannot fathom what is happening on the Rock with the PMOTT appointing a twice sworn -in and twice subsequently removed Minister. This time it came as a thief in the night, even though they really surface that way ...

One of the great things about living on the rock is one is subject to all kinds of natural phenomenon. I know we don't get snow, no, we leave the good parts out for the Canadiens and even those living in northern Florida. We have rain, sun, hurricanes (every so many years), mud volcanos, an entire lake of asphalt, salt ponds, 100% humidity and earthquakes. This morning at 2.27 nature did not disappoint, I first heard the rumbling, thought what the hell is wrong with the #$%^&& air conditioner and then the lovely roll started, the creaking of stuff in the room and then she was gone. I have two Rock earthquake stories, not that earthquakes are funny. In Arima where I grew up in the 'boys room' there was a set of barbells under the bed, under my bed, and loose barbells make the loudest sound when rattled by an earthquake. Motto, go to a gym if you live in an earthquake prone area. Guyana has very few earthquakes that are actually felt. Years ago I read where a fam...
