What a weekend, FIFA World Cup Finals and Wimbledon finals! What to watch? Well based on the times you can watch both, one after the other unless of course, the tennis goes into a horrific 6 hrs ordeal. It is a wonderful experience seeing the best of the best compete. I am not a sports crazie but champions are champions and tomorrow is going to be a day to remember. If you are that bored then you could look at the golf game in Turnberry.
This week on the Rock there was a relatively nothing story about an MP who had a medical situation. We all have our stories and when we fall ill that's it, we treat with it and bounce back within a couple days. I had an episode in 2013 when I collapsed at Miami Airport and was hospitalized. I was on official government business and as far as I was concerned my situation was not a private issue, even though the state did not incur any costs. Apparently, the issue on the Rock is what is private, what is public? As a public figure, meaning an elected Representative or appointed, like a Senator, can you claim 'privacy' and if so to what extent.
I do not subscribe to you being a public figure and then wanting to claim privacy when it suits you. You cannot be a half of a public figure. It does not work like that. When you sign up for the job you remove all rights to privacy. Your lifestyle, your hobbies, your family, what you say in private is all for public consumption. You are in no position to pick and choose what is for public comment and what is not.
We have had two situations recently with Cabinet Ministers falling ill during their term in office and in both cases the communication coming from official sources is nothing but confusion. Why is this? People fall ill, develop all kinds of ailments, we are human after all. So many world leaders have had all kinds of medical issues from Churchill suffering from severe depression, JFK with Addison's disease, Reagan with Alzheimer's, Buhari not known, Theresa May with diabetes receiving up to four insulin injections daily. What about the Prime Minister of New Zealand giving birth whilst in public office. Imagine the talk in town if that was on the Rock? The first question would have been who is the child father?
If we remember a number of Ministers in the last Government were actually removed for misbehavior in their private life. Does this mean therefore that when in public office there is no private life? Correct, there is none.
When you offer yourself for the public service you are asking people to trust you, to put their faith in you. This trust and faith cannot be subjective, it must be ever-present. When it comes to your medical fitness this is equally important and the public must be appraised of it. I want to know if you are going to be able to represent me regardless of your 'medical situation'. The public will always be sympathetic to any medical issue, we just want the truth, simple.
'I have practically no private life. I'm already used to this and ready for it. Yes, sometimes it is hard, but it is the choice I made'. Cristiano Ronaldo
The choice I made, exactly!
People of the Rock enjoy the big day tomorrow, pig out on all the munchies, scream and shout, have a great Sunday!
Good night and good luck!
