TTT is not the BBC!

With news being instant one can hardly stay out of the goings on worldwide. Within the last 24 hours, we had resignations by two Cabinet Ministers in the UK, a new far-right Justice was proposed by the POTUS for the US Supreme Court, all the boys in the cave rescue in Thailand were brought safely to the surface, France beat Belgium to qualify for the FIFA World Cup finals on Sunday, and here on the Rock the mobile phone of a guy who happens to be the son of a senior Cabinet Minister was found after reported stolen. It is truly amazing that we are so connected to the world. I know that the technology has been there for decades, CNN was founded in 1980 bringing 24 hr news to the world, long before even Kylian Mbappe was born. So, why the lesson in something that we all know already? Never thought you would ask.

What the hell is the reason for resurrecting loss-making TTT? What could possibly be the reason for shutting down one loss-making state-owned media house, sending home staff, removing the signage, repaint the building and the next day opening up a dusted off loss-making TTT with programming that no one is going to look at, incur huge operating expenses with little or no advertising to at least defer some of the costs and end up right back where you were when you closed loss-making CNMG. I have not read of a single justification that makes sense to do this. TTT was watched by the people of the Rock because cable, video, satellite TV, and the internet were not yet part of the deal. We did not watch TTT because of its riveting programming. TTT is not the BBC!

I think the PMOTT is now finally admitting that he and his government are totally lost as to what to do about the rampaging crime wave. The Sunday night massacre at the Chaguaramas boardwalk, which is smack bang in the PMOTT's constituency, may have come as a surprise to the members of the Cabinet but not by any means to the citizenry. Every single day of life there are multiple murders being committed in this country and all we hear is foolish excuses that constantly remind us that the Government in office is completely lost and clueless as to what to do. The bungling of the appointment of a Commissioner of Police, the appointment of a National Security Minister whose claim to fame is that he is the only trained bomb disposal expert in the country, his words not mine, the putting of every single egg you could find into the one basket with the Gang Bill only to now hear it is useless. After the AG makes all kinds of ridiculous claims about how many gangs and gang members, we are now being told about the migration of gangs to rural areas. Chaguaramas is at the heart of everything, it is not considered 'country'. The authorities seem to know about the movement of all the gang leaders and associates, yet after weeks of the Gang Bill being proclaimed not a single raid, not a single arrest, nothing, zero, zilch is the result. Lose a cell phone and it is fire and fury!

The Rock is heating up. The recession is now a real thing. Companies are experiencing a major slowdown in business, very little is happening, very little money is circulating, receivables and payments are under stress, and there is no hope coming from the persons who control the finances. If something does not happen soon we are going to find ourselves in a state of economic ruin, once again. This coupled with a high crime situation is not something we need, ever! I hate sounding like doom and gloom but the writing is on the wall. This is the fourth year the country has registered negative growth. Remember a Central Bank Governor was fired for actually using the 'recession' word. Well, you can fire who you want that does not change the price of cocoa. If the Government does not act swiftly they may end up with a country that is in a perilous state in 2020. Remember the election of 1986, the country was in a deep recession and remember the end result.

I guess the Carnival bands are starting the annual ritual of band launches so that may put a lot of people in a happy place. A fete does not an economy make!

Can the French do it again? time will tell!

Good night people of the Rock and good luck!

Peace and quiet

When you hear the words 'perfect' or 'the best' it makes you feel like a million dollars. Human nature is weird, a simple compliment can turn a whole story into a week of joy! And, yes, I am speaking about the Sunday night popcorn! Apparently, tonight was exceptional. I hope the rest of the week translates into 'perfect'. The horrible news of the deaths of two cyclists over the weekend came as a real shock. We both know a number of people who cycle for good weekend sport and to hear of Joe Brown being killed in an accident was truly heart-rending. When we heard of the accident we started to think of all the people we know who cycle and just hoped it might be somebody we did not know. Is this how it works, you hope that it's not someone you know, what about all the people who actually know the person? Truly a sad day! RIP Joe and Joanna! The issue of cycling and motorists is one that every country I am sure goes through. Is it that the main roads are for...

Time is an illusion!. Albert Einstein, and he should know. Today is already the 1st of March and it seems that we are hurtling through our galaxy at warp speed heading somewhere. The first Carnival Band launch will be in five months, parang music in eight,   and then the whole cycle begins again. This weekend is Pagwa  or the festival of Holi aka the festival of colours. Thousands of Hindus and citizens alike on the Rock will participate in this wonderful, happy ritual of spraying 'abeer' on each other in true friendship. Like many religious festivals it always has something to do with good over evil. Maybe we should declare this entire year the year of Holi and allow the good to take over and remove the evil.            I cannot fathom what is happening on the Rock with the PMOTT appointing a twice sworn -in and twice subsequently removed Minister. This time it came as a thief in the night, even though they really surface that way ...

One of the great things about living on the rock is one is subject to all kinds of natural phenomenon. I know we don't get snow, no, we leave the good parts out for the Canadiens and even those living in northern Florida. We have rain, sun, hurricanes (every so many years), mud volcanos, an entire lake of asphalt, salt ponds, 100% humidity and earthquakes. This morning at 2.27 nature did not disappoint, I first heard the rumbling, thought what the hell is wrong with the #$%^&& air conditioner and then the lovely roll started, the creaking of stuff in the room and then she was gone. I have two Rock earthquake stories, not that earthquakes are funny. In Arima where I grew up in the 'boys room' there was a set of barbells under the bed, under my bed, and loose barbells make the loudest sound when rattled by an earthquake. Motto, go to a gym if you live in an earthquake prone area. Guyana has very few earthquakes that are actually felt. Years ago I read where a fam...
