What is happening?

There must be an election in the air, yes another one! The media is alive with the two or three spokesmen of the rulers of the Rock. Headlines every day, media conferences, fire and brimstone speeches, threats made to attorneys at law, making light of perceived corruption with a simple justification, like every couple of hours. I tell you something is up!

Take for instance the government's stance on the decriminalizing of the weed. On week ago the PMOTT makes the statement that it is simply not on his government's agenda. This is after Caricom meets and the Report of the Regional Commission on Marijuana is presented.
The Commission was set up to 'conduct a rigorous inquiry into the social economic, health and legal issues surrounding marijuana use in the Caribbean, dismantling of the prohibition of marijuana in its totality across states'. The Commission was set up in March 2014 during a Caricom meeting in St. Vincent. Strangely enough, it only took four (4) years to present its report. This may actually be a first for Caricom. Like the vote on Dominica, the Rock takes a completely different view on things.
Low and behold I am greeted with the smiling, no, how about beaming faces of two of the lesser spokesmen saying that the weed is now full frontal on the PMOTT's agenda less than two weeks after his dismissal of any weed talk. What is happening?
The issue of the appointment of a Commissioner of Police and the now discredited merit list is now a case of the Parliament reopening, during its fixed vacation period, to debate the appointment and who wants to attend that is their business we the People of the Flower will be there doing the peoples work. What is happening?
The newly purchased 'bateau' with 'the Honorables' relaxing in the VIP section of the passenger area, now telling the population that it was not purchased as a 'fast ferry' but it was actually bought for the Toco - Scarborough crossing. The Toco Port has not yet been designed! The best part about the visit by 'the Honorables' was when one remarked and pointing at the same time as the other 'he buy de boat'. A ferry ride should be a calm, relaxing experience. There has been a flurry of media conferences with reference to the 'bateau'. What is happening?
The real spokesman tonight saying that he is now the head of a committee making the recommendations for new vessels to the Cabinet. How many people does it take to buy a boat? Well, if you are from the Rock it could be any number, depending on the time of day, or the day of the week or who is in more favor with the leader! The fun part is going to be for us plebs to try and remember who did what? At least we have on camera the guy who has in fact been identified as the chief procurement officer who purchased the newest 'bateau'.

In our quiet, sleepy village this weekend past, at about 11.00am a fight broke out outside a local liquor shop. One of the persons involved pulled out a firearm and proceeded to fire off over six rounds. This literally 3 buildings from the Maraval Police Station. The perp ran up an adjoining street. The police are still in the Station. I mention this because of what happened in Toronto this week. The Canadians are traumatized over the shootings in their relatively safe city, what with 2 persons dead, and we go about our business as usual. It is as though 'it was only six shots and nobody eh dead'. Next!

I fully support the decriminalizing of the weed, pardon every single person in jail for possession, throw out every case pending before the courts. Some officers will have to devise other means for supplementing income.
I fully support the LBGT parade this weekend! Enough of the Rock living in the last century!

Good night people and good luck!

'apology' expression of regret at having caused trouble for someone

Today Trinidad and Tobago was on fire. The discussions on the 'apology,' discussions on the status of the Parliament, everybody is now a certified meteorological expert reporting rainy season rain, people were out and about being very assertive about things that many of them did not really understand. Heat in the place! The statements being made, which caused the 'apology' to then be made, were being said, I think, without really understanding who we are as a people. This is 2017 and we still are having trouble in coming to grips with many social and historic issues that strangely enough are being discussed every day in many places and yet it is only a problem depending on who makes the statement. Let me say that the statement that was made was, even though to many factual, however it rubbed people the wrong way. This is where I have a problem. You read columns written by certain persons that under no circumstances will offend any sector of the society. That same posi

'the bongo night'

She looks at me and says ' you know what night it is?'. I immediately think of 'the bongo night' and she says 'it's Sunday that means popcorn'. So much for 'bongo'. Love the tropics, it is dark by 6.30 and will be light by 6.00am. This is good for ones being, the daylight and nighttime are more or less equal, good balance. We attended a showing of yet another brilliant artist, Abigail Hadeed, whose work spans decades. Her photography is exceptional and her current show ' the Weight of Water' at the 'Y' is something not to be missed. We are a truly talented people, only 1.3m of us yet we can produce world-class works of art. This is why we are very special, very special indeed. I see the great country of America is having their 'midterm' election.  Why should this be of any import for a small island like ourselves? Well for starters I think there is an equivalent Trini population living in the good ole USA. Depending on h

'aghhhhhhhh'

This week has me feeling so down about the rock and what really is our future. I have always considered myself to be Mr. Optimistic. Things would be bad, sometimes downright terrible with little or no hope and I would be there battling it out. The hard part is our present and future position is all man made [excuse the gender] and it seems that no matter what we do, how we vote, who we put our trust in, it somehow ends up bad. In 1956, the hope was there, a mass appeal, in 1986 it returned and was destroyed by 1990, in 2010 432,026 electors voted for the Peoples Partnership, in excess of 60% of the population. By 2015 a lot of the love disappeared and we found ourselves in a position of no-where once again. I use these years because the popular vote was there, the majority voted overwhelmingly for the winning party. Even though the winner in 1956 did not win by any semblance of a majority, over 80% of the electorate cast their vote. It is interesting to note that in 1956 the PPPG
